I originally wrote this in 2012, around the time universal health care was being discussed by our beloved political class intended to save us from ourselves. It has certainly been an interesting 11 years since.
When Thomas Paine penned Common Sense in 1776, in particular the quote above, he was referring to the “cause” that many today call the “American experiment.”
Today, we continually experiment on each American’s health, whether in a big pharma lab, hospital operating room, political office, or among the myriad of supplement companies promising better health and vitality with every pill or green drink.
Regardless, our nation’s collective health is vitally important, and that health begins with our personal behavior, and the mindset we each have dictating that behavior.
This summer, we once again celebrated the birth of my daughter (she turned 14 on July 4th) and the birth of this American experiment.
The Founding Father’s journey towards a free nation serves as a perfect metaphor and tool for declaring independence from your former lifestyle and beginning your own journey of building health from the inside-out. But as I looked at my daughter that day becoming lost in all the family, love and other wonderful things she has ahead of her in life, I admit I am not as optimistic about our country, specifically its state of health and fitness.
It got me wondering whether the Declaration of Independence could be used by those interested as more than simply a metaphor, but a commitment and personal declaration to unlearn and let go of all that is holding them back from living a life filled with health and vitality.
I submit that it can indeed, because why not?
Therefore, in honor of the 4th of July, I have developed a unique Declaration of Independence re-created through the prism of one’s personal health. With it, you can declare your independence from a former lifestyle and all the resulting chronic pains and sickness, weight loss challenges and external dependence I believe is keeping so many people from fully expressing their health.
This was definitely a fun and educational project, as I love to learn, teach and coach through the prism of health and fitness. (The classical PE project is a case in point.)
What if we can become a healthier nation AND learn a bit more about our founding history … are you kidding me? I covered many topics in this document that I have personally witnessed plague many people during their journey towards a healthier life.
The wording, grammar, punctuation and organization are spot on to the original document.
